Kenneth was born in 1868, the son of John Shaw and Christina Munro, cottars on croft 13 Ruisgarry (Sunhill). His father died of consumption when Kenneth was just six years old, and the family moved to Backhill. Kenneth became a fisherman and married Kate Connon from Edderton, where they made their home.
