46297: George Norman Macdonald

George Norman MacDonald grew up in Southampton, Ontario, Canada, and worked as a fisherman in Alpena, Michigan before starting his sailing career as a deckhand. He went on to serve the Pittsburgh Steamship Company as a first mate between 1915 and 1921, and then as a captain between 1922 and 1935. His "steamboats" worked on the Great Lakes of North America hauling iron ore and other cargoes for the steel industry. In the off season, he made his home with his wife Margaret and their children in Toledo, Ohio.

He drowned in Fairport Harbor, Ohio, after falling overboard from his ship, the Crawford, in 1935.

His nickname "boots" came from the large, cast-off pair of his father’s boots that he habitually wore as a boy.
