Roderick (1884-1959) was a son of James Smith and Margaret Maciver, who were cottars on the croft at 10 Branahuie. The family subsequently moved to Stornoway.
His parents and siblings emigrated to Canada in the 1900s. It has been suggested that Roderick emigrated later and returned to Stornoway.
Roderick married Mary Macleod of 7 Brenish. The couple settled in Stornoway and they had a family
