1791: Kyles Bernera, Lewis

Kyles Bernera is a narrow strait between Great and Little Bernera. At very low tides it is possible to walk across at the narrowest part. There are two houses on either side opposite each other – the one a ruin in Little Bernera was the Tackhouse and was empty from the 1840s.The family moved to the one in Great Bernera which is also called Tigh a Chaolais (the house on the narrows).

Being very sheltered, it has always been a favoured mooring place.

Kyles Bernera should not be confused with Kyles Berneray in North Uist.
