109676: From the Statistical Account of the Parish of Lochs 1833

Extract from 1833 Statistical Account, written by Rev Robert Finlayson

“The native sheep are very similar to the breed peculiar to North Wales. Their wool is fine but that breed is nearly extirpated and the common black-face and cheviot breeds have been introduced into the islands by Dr Macaulay of Linshader and Mr Stewart of Valimas – the only capitalists who have done much to improve the breed of sheep and cattle in the Lewis.

The only Post Office is in Stornoway. A line of road was commenced at Stornoway in 1830 but has not as yet extended beyond the limits of the parish of Stornoway.

The Parish numbered 530 families in all, an increase of 164 over the period of 37 years since 1796. They all attend the Established Church.
