45506: John M Smith

John M, son of John Smith and Catherine Mackay, 16 Balallan went to India in 1913 and served as a Lieutenant with the RNVR during the First World War. He returned to Lewis before joining a ship trading with Mexico. John worked for the Mexican Eagle Oil Company, where he became Assistant Manager. Due to political unrest in the country, he moved to the USA in 1938 and married a woman who may have come from London.

At the outbreak of the Second World War, he rejoined the forces as a Commander in the RNR. He was a Captain in the Russian Convoys in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean and was stationed on HMS Hannibal in Algiers when he was killed by an explosion aboard an ammunition shi.
