24166: Rev Murdoch Macrae

Rev Murdoch Macrae, 13 Swordale, Point married Christina Ann Mackenzie, 7 Laxay and resided in Stornoway.

In 1938, he became a member of the Harris Tweed Association and subsequently in March 1958, travelled at his own expense to the USA to argue the case for the relaxation of the restriction placed on imported woollen cloth. His negotiaions, which included an approach to the President of the United States, resulted in a reduction of the import tariff on Harris Tweed. The importance of this achievement cannot be overestimated when consideration is given to the strategic place the American market occupied at that time and the many livelihoods in Lewis dependent on weaving in that day.
