117389: John Lemuel Bethune

John Lemuel Bethune, born 1848, was the son of Roderick Bethune and Mary Morrison, Loch Lomond. John worked as a teacher for a short time before training to become a doctor. His father Roderick would have preferred him to be a clergyman, and it was John’s uncle Archie Morrison that was brought in to make peace between the two. John qualified as Doctor of Medicine in 1875. In 1885 he married Mary Catherine Jones, with whom he was to have eight children. They lived in Baddeck.

John was member of the Provincial House of Assembly between 1886 and 1896 and was elected to the Canadian House of Commons between 1896 and 1900.
