101709: Neil Murray

Neil (born 1854) was the son of Donald Murray and Ann Maclennan; it is not certain where the family had been living at the time of his birth. His paternal grandmother had been living at 25 Old Back until 1858, when she obtained 18/19 Back. His mother’s family had links to 26 Vatisker.

Sometime after 1858 his grandmother divided her croft and retained the section that became known as 18 Back. In due course his father inherited 18 Back.

Neil married Catherine Macarthur, 32 Upper Carloway; they resided at 18 Back initially. At some point they obtained 52 Vatisker.
