118098: Maitlandville, Ontario

Maitlandville was located in Huron County, Ontario, east of Goderich, on the Maitland River.

It was founded in 1834 when it was known as Gairbaid. Later it was known as Maitlandville, Bridgend Place, or Bridge End Place, and Slabtown.

In 1856 a wooden bridge joined the flats to Goderich town.

In 1879, the name was changed to Saltford, after a company drilling for oil , in 1866, found a solid salt bed. It is still being mined. In the 1880s there were seven salt wells, two taverns, two general stores, two tanneries, a brewery and hop yard, a lime kiln, a sawmill and a blacksmith.

An iron bridge was built in 1883 and the abutments can still be seen.
