115757: Schoolhouse, Coll

taigh-sgoile, Col

There have been several schoolhouses in Coll.

John Munro was a teacher in Coll from 1819 until at least 1821. It is likely he lived in a schoolhouse, but nothing is known about its location.

Another schoolhouse existed from the late 1840s until the mid 1850's. Originally it would have been located in Old Coll, but when the crofts were relotted it is thought to have been on the croft at 1 Coll. The occupants were the Schoolmaster: Murdo Mackenzie and his wife, Margaret Macdonald, and their children. In the mid 1850s Murdo moved to become the schoolmaster in Garrabost. No further occupants are recorded for this schoolhouse after the family left.
