W J Macdonald was established in 1931 on 5 Francis Street, Stornoway by William John Macdonald.

In 1975 Robert A Smith bought W J Macdonald’s. Robert’s father, John Smith, was also a butcher and had established John Smith and Sons on 34 Church Street, Stornoway, and 43 Keith Street, Stornoway. Robert continued running the business as W J Macdonald’s, but it was known locally as Bobby Smith Butchers.
