120910: Sacred Heart Hospital, Daliburgh, South Uist

Daliburgh Hospital, South Uist was established in 1894 through a financial donation through the Marquis of Bute, leading to the hospital being known at the Bute Hospital. Originally set up as a non-denominationally hospital, nuns from the Sacred Heart Order provided nursing care and the hospital became known as the Sacred Heart Hospital and later Daliburgh Hospital.

The hospital took patients from the islands of Barra, Eriskay, South Uist and Benbecula.

The hospital closed in 2001 along with the Lochmaddy Hospital in North Uist, with the services of both transferring to the new Uist & Barra Hospital in Balivanich, Benbecula. The hospital building was retained and is now a care home for the elderly, Taigh a’ Chridhe Uile Naomh.
