93144: Jessie Smith

Jessie (born 1877) was the daughter of Angus Smith and Isabella Campbell of 47 North Tolsta.

Jessie’s mother died in 1887; sometime later her father married Mary Mackenzie.

Jessie married Colin Campbell, of 62 North Tolsta, and the couple settled at 47 North Tolsta. They had seven children: four boys and three girls.

Jessie was widowed in 1916, when her husband was washed overboard while serving with the Royal Navy Reserves.

47 North Tolsta passed to Jessie.

On the 5th of August 1918 her eldest son John was fatally injured aboard ship while serving with the Merchant Navy.

On the 16th of March 1921, during The Great Gale, the roof was blown off the family home. Her son Angus was lying in bed seriously ill at the time and his bedding was also blown away. He was moved first to the barn and then the nearest house. He died later that year.

In due course 47 North Tolsta passed to her youngest son Colin.
