91068: John Murray

John (1806-1884) was the son of Angus Murray who was a boundary shepherd at Old Glen Tolsta; John’s mother is not known.

The earliest records of Glen Tolsta place him and his father renting in the Glen in 1830.

John married Mary Macleod from Gress and became a boundary shepherd at 1 Old Glen Tolsta; the couple had their first child there. 

The family were re-located to 29b Old South Tolsta in 1842 when Old Glen Tolsta was cleared; the couple had a further two children at 29b Old South Tolsta.

In the 1851 croft relottings he obtained 6 North Tolsta; the couple had one child there.

The family emigrated, along with John’s brothers, to Huron Township, Bruce County, Ontario, Canada in 1853. Once in Ontario the couple had a further two children. In total they had six children: four boys and two girls.
