Donald MacAskill was born in 1803, the son of Donald MacAskill and Ann MacQueen of old Ruisgarry. He married Effie MacLeod, with whom he had a daughter Ann. They lived in Ruisgarry, where Donald worked as a tailor. By 1851 they had been removed to Baile, where they lived as cottars, Donald earning a living through fishing.
