John Macmillan

John, son of Duncan Macmillan and Mary Todd, Lochielside, Lochaber was teaching in the Ladies School in Balallan from 1864-1867 after which he went to the Free Church College in Glasgow and was licensed by the Free Church Presbytery in Glasgow in 1870. He was ordained and inducted to the parish of Lochbroom on 2 October 1872 and was a notable Gaelic preacher. A pioneer of Land Reform in the Highlands, he had much influence in rousing public opinion against the evictions and thus helped to bring about the Crofters Act of 1886. He was married to a Sarah Boyd and he retired from the ministry in March 1905.
