48056: William Kirk Wilson

William Kirk Wilson (1890-1919) was born in Coatbridge.

At Stornoway, in 1915, he married Mary Ann Nicolson, 12 Gravir. William and Mary Ann settled at 8 South Beach Street, Stornoway and they had two daughters.

He was a boilermaker and served in the Royal Navy in the First World War. His record indicated that he was 5ft 8½ in tall with dark hair, grey eyes and a fresh complexion. William was based at HMS Pembroke and served aboard HMS Mavis, HMS Mistletoe and HMS Iolaire.

He lost his life in the Iolaire Disaster. His name is mentioned in Loyal Lewis: Roll of Honour 1914-1918 and he is commemorated on Panel 32 of the Chatham War Memorial, the Stornoway War Memorial, the Iolaire Memorial at Holm and the Iolaire Memorial at Stornoway.
