16239: Anne Mackenzie
Anne Mackenzie (born 1876), daughter of Alexander Mackenzie and Mary Macaulay, of 1 Aird Uig. Anne spent most of her childhood years staying at her grandfather Macaulay’s house in Islivig, as was not uncommon then.
Anne went to Glasgow at 16, in 1891, to work in one of the ‘big houses’. She was living in Rosevale St, Partick, when she met and married William Shearer, a cabinet-maker from Ayr in southern Scotland. They had six children and moved back to Ayr in 1908.
William would not let Anne speak to the children in Gaelic, but she did pass it on to her grandson Joseph.
Anne died in Prestwick in 1974.
