Jean was a daughter of Dr Peter Matheson, Stornoway and Jean Hunter MacKay, Airdrie. She lived with her parents at Miavaig when her father was general practitioner for Uig. Jean trained as a nurse but worked mostly in dental nursing in Edinburgh, Bracknell, South Africa and in the Brighton area. 

Jean married Malcolm Allen from Shoreham-on-Sea. They had no family.
