John, also known as William John, born 1845, was the son of crofter Neil MacLeod and Marion MacAskill of Borve. In 1854 the crofts were cleared to make way for Borve Farm and the family became cottars. In  August 1855 they left Plymouth, sailing to Australia on the Royal Albert.
