Neil, born 1840, was the son of Peter MacLeod and Margaret Ferguson of Ruisgarry. With the re-organisation of the crofts in 1845, the family emigrated to Framboise, Cape Breton. It was in Cape Breton that Neil married Kate MacAskill, also originally from Berneray.
