106815: Effie MacLeod

Effie, born 1801, was the daughter of John MacLeod and Ann MacAskill of Borve. In 1823 Effie had a son, Norman with neighbour John MacLeod. In 1841 Effie and Norman were living at her brother Donald’s croft in Borve. By 1851 Effie held her own croft in Borve, farming a plot of 8 acres. Living with her was her younger sister Catherine.

In 1854, with the clearance of crofts to make way for Borve Farm, Effie and Catherine were moved to Backhill, where they lived as cottars. In old age Effie was blind and a pauper, living with her son Norman at 30 Backhill.
