106430: Mary MacLellan

Mary MacLellan from Aird married Donald Ferguson of Clachan, with whom she was to have three children. She was district nurse on Berneray, staying at the Nurse’s Cottage from 1942 with her husband and three children. The children attended Berneray School. The youngest remembers catching measles, and despite strict instructions to stay indoors in the dark, was caught by his mother sunbathing on the rocks behind the Cottage.

He also recalled a seaplane landing in Bays Loch a year or so later, with a bomb disposal crew to deal with the many mines that drifted ashore. It was a fortunate coincidence because his mother had a patient needing a doctor. The pilot flew the doctor over from Lochmaddy.
