John, known as Johnnie, was born in 1926, the son of Donald MacLean and Jessie Mary MacLean of Quarry, Backhill. He was a pupil at Berneray School from 1932. Quarry passed to Johnnie following his father’s death.
Johnnie married Morag MacAskill of 6 Borve, with whom he was to have three children.
