64695: Isle of Pabbay, Sound of Harris

Pabbay is a now-uninhabited island in the Sound of Harris, off the west beach of Berneray. It was a fertile island with several villages but storms destroyed part of the island, notably in 1697.

The name means priest’s island and the remains of an old church, Teampall Mhoire, can be seen in the deserted village of Baile na Cille.

(There is another Pabbay in Loch Roag in Uig, Lewis.)
