The Scottish county of Ross & Cromarty was created in 1890 by the merger of the former counties of Ross-shire and Cromartyshire, the latter consisting of many separate portions scattered across Ross-shire. Ross & Cromarty, and previously Ross-shire, included the Isle of Lewis but not the adjoining Isle of Harris, which was part of Inverness-shire. Today the area of Ross & Cromarty, except for Lewis, forms part of Highland Region.
