31934: ECC 17.1 Eilean Chalium Cille – FIELD SYSTEM (Post Medieval – 1540 AD to 1900 AD)

Summary:

FIELD SYSTEM (Post Medieval – 1540 AD to 1900 AD)
Pre-crofting feannagan or lazybed field system

Location:

NB 38929 21296

Full description:

"Located around an unnamed knoll that overlooks the modern causeway from Crobeag to the Eilean Chalium Cille. Arrayed radially around the eastern and southern slopes these feannagan run for 50 metres down the slope towards the sea. These rigs are sinuous in course, hemispherical in cross-section, standing to a maximum height of 0.5 metres and are typical of the hand dug lazybeds that accompany pre-crofting settlement. Fragmentary remains of turf walls on the east and southern sides of the rigs seem to indicate the presence of a larger, more coherant field system." (Burgess 2004, 91-92
