STACK YARD (Post Medieval to Crofting – 1540 AD to 1950 AD)
Stack yard enclosure

Location:

Full description:

"Situated on the north shore of Loch Seaforth Head at Rubha nan Carn, the remains of this sub-circular enclosure measures 18 metres from west to east and 15 metres from north to south. It is constructed of turf, then an external stone reinforcement and is attatched to the southern face of blackhouse (45.4). This enclosure is a stack or kale yard, and its state of preservation suggests it was constructed and primarily used during the pre-crofting period when house (45.4) was constructed." (Burgess 2004, 60)
