104937: Free Church Manse, Backhill

The Free Church Manse was built by stonemason John MacDonald of Ardmaree, with the help of free local labour.

Missionary Alexander Campbell and his family stayed there between 1918 and 1926, followed by Malcolm Morrison and his family, who stayed until at least 1937. He was succeeded by Malcolm MacMillan, Donald John MacDonald and then Angus A Morrison until 1986.

No longer a manse, the property is now known as Fàilte, and doubles as the island’s Post Office.
