47682: Habost Tack House

Habost Tack House was situated on the shore at what is now 13 Habost, before the village was broken up into crofts, and was occupied by the tacksman and his family. Now gone, the house was built of stone and lime walls with red roof tiles, fragments of which were found on the site of the farmhouse when its stones were taken for other buildings.

It is believed locally that the red tiles – highly unusual in a district of thatch and occasionally slate – would have been brought to Habost by a sea captain who was known to frequent the area, possibly a brother or other relation of Lady Habost.
