Mary was born c 1793, the daughter of Farquhar and Margaret Macdonald of Earshader farm. She died before her husband and some of her family emigrated and she is buried at Baile na Cille. Her gravestone reads:

Sacred to the memory of Mary Smith, wife of Kenneth Stuart tacksman Hacklate who departed this life on the 7th of June 1851 aged 59 years. Lamented by a wide circle of friends and acquaintances. This is erected at the request of her second daughter Catherine. The Lord giveth the Lord taketh away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.
