June 21, 1918: A FURIOUS GALE

On Thursday evening of last week one of the strongest gales of the year swept over the district, badly damaging the young crops, which were this year greatly in advance of the usual, and looking most promising. Even the grass was blackened and shriveled. On Friday showers of hailstones followed and now the tops of the oats have become yellow.
