LOCAL AND DISTRICT NEWS – UIG

August 3, 1917

RUSSIANS AT AIRD UIG – The crew of the Russian s.v. "Fateja" (Captain, A.W. Soderlund) landed safely, but in an exhausted condition, at Aird, on 27 ult. On the previous Tuesday they were overhauled by a German submarine about 120 miles west of the Gallan Head. They were fired at, at a distance of 3 miles, and they immediately took to the small boat, which got its gunwale and two upper boards stove in. Captain Soderlund wishes to express publicly his appreciation of the kindness the people of Aird showed them.
