10623: Sub-Postmistress honoured by Post Office Counters

An elderly Lewis sub-postmistress who tried to fight a fire on her premises with buckets of water was honoured yesterday by Post Office Counters.

Mrs Alexina Smith, 80, was rewarded for her courage following a fire at Keose Post Office, which she ran for 40 years, in North Lochs on November 15 last year. She scorched her hair trying to douse the flames with buckets of water which she fetched from her house next door.
