108711: Books of Clanranald

The two Books of Clanranald are Gaelic manuscripts containing the traditional history of the Donald clan.

The Red Book of Clanranald dates from the 17th century, the notebook of Niall MacMhuirich, one of the hereditary dynasty of poets and historians who served the Lords of the Isles and subsequently the Chiefs of Clan Ranald. It is possible that the existing Red Book was copied from an earlier manuscript. An image of the book is available from the National Museums of Scotland.

The Black Book is mainly the work of Christopher Beaton, with some material copied from the Red Book.

The University of Edinburgh website includes an informative article about the two books.
