Kenneth was the son of Alexander Macmillan and Annabella Maciver; it is not clear where the family were living at the time of his birth. In 1922 the family obtained 46 Gress, which is located in Glen Tolsta, but they later settled at 35 Coll.

He married Mary Thomson, of 24 Coll, and the couple settled in Stornoway.
