93482: Donald Macleod

Donald (1887-1919) was the son of Malcolm Macleod and Mary Maciver; the family were cottars at 11 North Tolsta.

In 1895 the family obtained 58 North Tolsta.

His mother died in 1910.

During the First World War Donald served with the Royal Naval Reserve. He drowned, as did his younger brother Malcolm, during the Iolaire disaster on the 1st of January 1919. Some of the survivors claimed Donald had got ashore, but went back into the sea to try to find his brother; others find the idea of anyone going back into the sea that night beyond belief. His funeral was reported in the Stornoway Gazette District News on the 24th of January 1919 and he is mentioned on the North Tolsta Historical Society World War One website.
