John was a son of Malcolm Mackay, North Rona.

He married married Annie Macdonald, of 37 North Tolsta. John and Annie were Cottars at John's brother's croft at  6/7 Fivepenny, Ness.  They had at least three children.

In 1884 the family emigrated to Canada, with Annie's mother and five of her siblings. They settled at Lake Megantic for a year and then returned to Lewis as Cottars on his brother's croft.
