8528: John Sutherland

John Sutherland (1844-1905), of Loth in Sutherland.

He was an an English teacher at Mackay’s School in Stornoway, and then headmaster at the General Assembly School, before being appointed the first headmaster of the Nicolson Institute in 1873. Further infomation can be found at the Stornoway Historical society website.

On the 7th of October 1874 he married Alice Munro Reid, of Keose Manse.

In 1882 he moved to Forres as headmaster of Anderson’s Institution and the couple settled at 6 Cumming Street, Forres.
