Catherine was born in about 1848, the daughter of John MacKinnon and Betsy MacAskill of old Ruisgarry. Catherine's father died when she was about 12 years old and the family moved instead to become cottars at Lamerick. Catherine became a servant, marrying Donald MacSween from Meavaig South, which is presumably where they made their home.
