Mary was born in 1893, the daughter of Kenneth Shaw and Mary MacLeod, who was also known as Mary MacLennan. She was born at her grandmother's home at Quay, becoming a pupil at Berneray School in 1898. Her father, a sailor, based himself both in Glasgow and at Quay. Following her grandmother's death, the family moved to Glasgow.
