Neil was born in 1895, the son of John MacAskill and Marion MacMillan of Quay, Berneray. When Neil was only 4 years old, his father and older brother Alexander tragically drowned, following which the family moved to Rubha Mor. Neil was a pupil at Berneray School between 1901 and 1910.
