Samuel was born in 1885, the youngest child of John MacLeod and Rachel Paterson of Quay. He became a farm labourer. His first wife was Mary MacLeod of 8 Quidinish; the couple resided in Glasgow. He later became the second husband of Morag Gillies from 3 Leacklee.
