Margaret, more usually Peggy, was born in 1828, the daughter of Norman MacLeod and Ann Shaw of old Borve. Her mother died when she was about seven years old and her father remarried, moving the family to Quay. 

Peggy married Martin MacAulay of Borve. They lived initially in Borve, moving to Baleloch shortly after the birth of their second daughter in 1855.
