77058: George Christian MacLeod

George Christian was the youngest child of Donald MacLeod and Christina MacCusbic of Quay, and presumably named for the island’s Doctor Hotham George Christian. Born in 1893, he was a pupil at Berneray School between 1899 and 1909. By 1911 he was working as a farm labourer.

George became a seaman and ferryman. In 1921 he married Mary Campbell, daughter of Berneray’s Free Church missionary. Their first daughter was born at Mary’s parental home in Backhill, and their second at Quay. They later moved to 12 Lochportain. George died of supposed consumption at his brother Malcolm’s home at Trealigarry in 1925.
