Murdo was born in about 1833, the son of Donald and Ann MacLeod of Pabbay, then Tahay. In 1855 he and his parents emigrated to Australia on the Royal Albert, a voyage organised by the Highlands and Islands Emigration Society. There, he married Mary MacLennan from Berneray.
