75222: John MacAskill

Johnnie MacAskill was born in 1909, the son of Donald MacAskill and Ann Morrison of Ferry and later 23 Borve. He was a pupil at Berneray School from 1916. Johnnie married Isabella MacQuarrie from Locheport at Clachan in 1942. They lived at 23 Borve, and later 13 Ruisgarry (Sunhill) with their two children, Norman and Katie Ann. 23 Borve passed to Johnnie following his father’s death in 1956.

In December 1998, as the oldest resident on Berneray, Johnnie was one of the first people to cross the newly opened causeway to North Uist. Following Johnnie’s death in 2006 at the age of 97, 23 Borve and 13 Ruisgarry were passed to his son Norman.
