Rachel was born in 1833, the daughter of Alexander MacLean and Marion MacAskill of old Ruisgarry. The family moved to croft 11 Ruisgarry (Quay) which her father obtained in the 1850 relotting of Ruisgarry, though they were later removed to Ludag. She married Finlay Mackay of Kyles Scalpay.
