Jessie (or Jess) was born in 1902, the daughter of Malcolm MacLeod and his wife Janet MacKay of 1/2 Ruisgarry (Sandhill). She attended Berneray School before leaving for Portree Higher Grade School. She was in the Auxiliary Territorial Service during World War 2, becoming a captain. Later she ran a gift shop in Largs.
